Mississippi-based Standard Mechanics was founded by mechanical engineer Trey Leonard, PhD, after he recognized a need for timely materials testing services during his university days. His company specializes in the unique field of dynamic tensile testing, and provides testing services to R&D engineers at top-tier companies around the globe, as well as the growing automotive industry in Mississippi and neighboring states.
Trey’s company employs a pneumatic powered Hopkinson Bar to carry out the dynamic testing in milliseconds as opposed to the more typical static testing which can take minutes or hours to complete. This requires the test coupons to be cut into various different geometries based on the application. The precision of cuts is paramount to the reliability and accuracy of the test data produced. This data is then collected, and in some cases, contributes to establishing more crashworthy vehicles.
To accelerate the process and reduce cost to customers, Trey purchased a WAZER.
Trey explained “We used to outsource the machining of sample coupons on the wire EDM, but the WAZER has quickly become an influential machine in my shop.” Using the WAZER has cut lead times by over a week and reduced costs by easily processing steel and aluminum for testing.
“The WAZER pays for itself for me not having to worry about outsourcing, and being able to be more fluid in my workflow”
The WAZER has generated 15-20% more business because of its 75% faster turnaround time. Plus, Trey pointed out “the WAZER pays for itself for me not having to worry about outsourcing, and being able to be more fluid in my workflow.” With in-sourcing becoming more crucial to a company’s success every day, the WAZER will ensure the continued timely delivery of crucial data to Standard Mechanics’ discerning customers.
